Agave

They are considered to be a perennial - evergreen.  Great as a focal point in a rock garden or along the coast.  These beauties can make a splash in any type of garden.  They can handle the hot scalding summer sun and fight off the cold snaps of our winter.  They come in many colors, sizes,  and varieties.  They each have their unique structure, colors, and/or foliage.  They can last five to ten seasons before producing a large stalk of yellow flowers.  And then here comes their pups.  They need well-draining soil and lots of sun.  They respond well to fertilizer.  Sunny spots, sandy soil, and rock gardens are great places for Agave.  Large or small they make a great addition to your landscape.  Size varies based on variety.  No irrigation that ok too!  Cold hardy zone 9.  Yes, drought tolerant.  Yes, toxic to pets and livestock so put it in an area that is not accessible to your little munchers.  Many species are said to be salt tolerant.  Sandy, gritty, well-draining soil is a must!  They have large spikes so put them in an area with low traffic if possible.  Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer).  Use a well-balanced slow release for best results.  Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.

The FARM and Big League Garden Center is located at 1625 Airport Rd., Ormond Beach, FL  32174.  Just west of the I95 overpass and east of Tymber Creek Rd.  Hours are 10am to 4pm - Tuesday to Saturday.
