Ground Orchid aka Spathoglottis

A tough, hardy perennial that produces vividly colored blooms.  Blossoms are in small clusters.   These are the easiest orchids to grow?  They like warm, shady areas in your landscape.  They attract insects that are beneficial to your garden.  Blooms are small and brightly colored, and foliage is sort of palm-like shaped.  They can reach up to 2 feet long at maturity.  Available in colors of purple, pink, yellow, and variations.  Use it as a ground cover or under that large shade tree for color.  Grow in containers for your patios, pool deck, inside your pool cage, or home.  Cold hardy zone 9.  Most orchids are not frost tolerant, so cover or bring them indoors during our brief cold snaps.  Like a part shade to sunny location in the landscape.  Said to be somewhat drought tolerant, but like most plants prefers a regular watering schedule.  Said to NOT be toxic to pets and livestock.  However, if ingested can cause some stomach issues.  Considered to be heavy feeders and like a balanced slow-release fertilizer (30-10-20 NPK).  Apply every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.  Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
