Lauterbachiana Alocasia aka Purple Sword

Lauterbachiana Alocasia aka Purple Sword

Another Alocasia to add to your collection. Also known as 'Purple Sword'. Produces Dark green leaves with purple undersides that are long and narrow with wavy edges. At maturity can reach between there to 5 feet tall depending on whether you grow it in a container indoors or plant it in the ground outdoors. Just like all Alocasia it is a must that you place this plant in a spot that gets bright indirect light. Remember when growing indoors to keep away from the draft of the AC/heating vents.  Some of the larger varieties can acclimate to full sun but not this one! Water frequently but wait until the top inch or two of the soil is dry.  Too much water will create wet roots. Prefers heat above 65 degrees so growing in containers outdoors allows you the ability to bring it indoors during our winter months.  When container growing your Alocasia use a perlite and standard potting mix.  Cold hardy in zone 9.  Not drought-tolerant and needs frequent watering.  Sensitive to salt - NO not salt tolerant.  Does not like a sunny location - bright indirect light is a must.  Alocasia can get sunburn!  Alocasia are said to be deer-resistant.  Some say deer change their path when encountering an Alocasis.  So during our hot humid days put your Alocasis in the landscape to deter deer!  Fertilize with a good slow-release fertilizer and remember to water frequently.  Alocasia can be heavy feeders! Feed in the spring in summer during their growing months. Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
