Petunias
Petunias are a popular winter annual. They flower for a long period and come in a wide array of colors. Some have large flowers and others are small. The best time to plant petunias is in October and November. They do best in a full sun location in the landscape. Like well-draining soil that is kept moist. When planting as a groundcover space 12 to 18 inches apart. Once established they are more drought resistant but do prefer a regular watering schedule. Fertilize every month with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Occasionally pinch off the top layer to encourage growth. Deadhead the large flowering and/or the double flowering to encourage growth. Petunias with small flowers are self-cleaning - lower maintenance. Protect your petunias from frost with a frost cloth during our short cold snaps. They will flower long during our cooler months when well cared for. Cold hardy zone 9. Said to be heat and drought-tolerant. Said to be salt tolerant. Said to be not toxic to pets - horses too! Petunias are not deer-resistant. Petunias make great cut flowers and will brighten up indoors and/or your patio areas. Use in a mixed flower bed. In a window box. Plant in containers and place throughout your home or on your pool deck or inside your pool cage. They come in many colors and will be a great source of color throughout the cooler month. #StayHealthyGetDirty
