Pie Crust Croton aka Mortimer Croton

This evergreen perennial is know as a Croton . So don't be afraid to use many in your landscape. They like high humidity and heat. Love bright light and can grow in a partial shade during the warm months. Remember croton needs bright light to continue to have vibrant color. Pie Crust can reach 6 feet tall or more if it finds its happy place. Pie Crust has beautiful long pointed leaf-shaped foliage that is green and yellow and turns red at maturity. As it ages the red can turn to maroon. They have squiggly edges. These plants prefer heat, bright light and high humidity. They do well and color nicely if in a part shade area when the temps are warm enough. They like moist soil during the growing season but not wet soil. They prefer the soil to be well draining. Cold hardy in zone 9. Can be somewhat drought tolerant at maturity. Said to be deer resistant. Toxic to pets and livestock so plant in an area not accessible to your little muchers. They make great additions to any beachside or coastal landscape. Plant in mass, or as an accent plant or a stand-alone. They also grow well in a container. Put a few crotons on your patio, pool deck, or porch to add color and life to those areas. Live in a condo? Put a few in containers on your patio or terrace. Croton comes in many colors, sizes, and leaf shapes. Fertilize in the spring, summer, and fall with a good granular slow-release tropical fertilizer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
