Red Button Ginger aka Costus Woodsonii
Red button ginger is considered a tropical tender perennial. Gingers spice up your yard much as they do in cooking; they are a beautiful group of plants frequently used in Florida landscapes. They provide a unique texture and a splash of tropical color. They typically are a low-maintenance plant with attractive foliage and long-lasting, colorful blooms that make great cut flowers. Red Button Ginger, named because of the flower head it produces. It's one of the most robust gingers. Considered a perennial and grows underground through stems. They like rich moist soil but tend to be quite a drought-tolerant plant once established. They like a part-sun to filtered-sun to shade spot in your landscape. They may go dormant here in Central Florida based on our winter temps. But they will return with the warm spring weather. You should cut off any winter damage in early spring. At maturity, they can reach 3 to 4 feet tall and sometimes more in their happy place. Their foliage is a mid-green in color with beautiful red bracts from which an orange-yellowish edible flower will emerge. Cold Hardy zone 9B. They are said to have a tolerance to salt. They attract bees, butterflies, and birds. You can use them as a border plant, in a mass planting bed. Remember to fertilize in the spring, summer, and fall with a good slow-release granular tropical fertilizer. remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
