Spindle Palms

You will know this palm by its golden stalks when young and it's pillar/spindle-like trunk when it is mature. It will add a bit of the tropics to any formal landscape. And will pop in a tropical landscape with its straight and sturdy trunk that has ridges resembling a spindle - thus the origin of its name. Spindle palms grow slowly and reach approximately 20 feet to 25 at maturity. A sunny spot in your landscape will keep this palm looking its best.

Cold hardy in warm zones of 9B. The Spindle palm will live through most brief cold snaps. But, is not a fan of frost! If exposed, it should only damage the foliage. And this can be removed in the spring. The Spindle is salt tolerant and drought tolerant once established. When established a good weekly watering should be enough to keep your Palm happy. You will need to trim off old fronds occasionally as it is not self-cleaning. Under the Spindle is a great place to plant your perennial or annual flowers, a short shrub, or put a garden bench to enjoy the landscape you have created. In the landscape... this palm can be used to flank your entranceway, as a focal or anchor plant in a landscape bed, line your walkway or driveway with this beauty. What a statement that would make! It can also be used as a stand-alone specimen in a small to average size yard. Your landscape is your vision and/or canvas. Because it is so slow-growing, It can be used in large containers and yes it will grow even slower in containers. You can use it on your pool deck or inside a tall pool cage. Or, on your patio, porch, or lanai. Put a few containers inside your courtyard. You will be able to enjoy this palm for many years In containers. Outgrowing the container? Find that perfect spot in your landscape for your Spindle. Fertilize spring, summer, and fall with a good slow-release granular Palm fertilizer. Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
