Sun Bromeliad

Writer's picture: Tommy GanzTommy Ganz

Most bromeliads need the cover of a tree canopy to survive. However not these beauties. These are several of the few that enjoy bright direct light and will thrive in the sun. Considered easy to grow and low maintenance. These can be grown in the landscape in containers and/or as landscape plants. What amazing colored foliage they produce. Considered to be tropical and subtropical plants that love a humid environment. With that said temps above 40 degrees are their favorite. They require little water and store some of the water they receive in the cup in the center so ....they are considered to be drought-tolerant. Cold hardy zone 9. Drought, heat, and humidity tolerant.Somewhat salt tolerant. Deer resistant. ASPCA says none of them are poisonous or toxic to cats, dogs, or other common indoor pets. Most do not require fertilizer but some varieties can benefit from regular light feedings. The nutrition will help enhance its flower production and its foliage colors.
