Produces a beautiful striped green and yellow leaf plant that has a dramatic impact on any landscape. Amazing in a tropical landscape but works well in the Mediterranean or formal setting to add that splash of color. It can be used as a filler plant in a mass planting or an accent plant on the corner of your home. Along a fence or property line too. Use it as a focal point inside your circular driveway or in front of that tall green privacy hedge. It will produce fragrant shell-shaped flowers when the weather is warm.
They can grow in full sun or a shaded area. However, they prefer a break from our hot summer afternoon sun. The variegated ginger will add an amazing impact of color to any shaded area. Considered to be a somewhat easy maintenance plant. A moderate grower that will reach 3 to 6 feet tall with a spread of 5 to 8 feet at maturity. Cold Hardy in zone 9B when planted in a protected area or grown in containers and brought indoors during our brief cold snaps. You can cover for protection too. Said to be moderately salt-tolerant and drought-tolerant once established. They do best with a regular irrigation schedule. May die back during the winter but a good trim in spring will usually bring them roaring back. It is said the deer do not favor variegated ginger. Not said to be toxic to pets. Fertilize in the spring, summer, and fall with a good granular tropical fertilizer. Remember to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application.
